Richard Clarkson and I met through a mutual friend. Richard is the creator of the Cloud light fixture – equal part art and furniture. We knew within 10 minutes that he was the designer for the Meural frame. He was inquisitive, insightful, and passionate.
Richard’s philosophy is to combine traditional elements with an inventive, playful approach. The Meural Lightbox frame is the culmination of this philosophy. The Lightbox gives the viewer an optical illusion that the mat and display are floating, while remaining one solid entity. This elegant design is created with soft maple wood, one of the favorite materials among furniture makers and craftsmen.
Richard designed the Meural Black and Meural White with the onus on simplicity. These frames are also soft maple. The frames are stained with black or white so you can still see the grain. We felt this was important because it’s honoring art as a medium, and the tradition of framing art. All Meural frames are sourced and made in the USA.
You can see Richard’s design process is one of exploration, collaboration, and refinement. We were presented with four concepts. And we went back and considered each with the following criteria:
- Is this design compatible with our technology?
- Is this design versatile enough for the different artworks for display?
- Can this design be harmonious with other furniture?
We’re proud to say Richard’s designs fit all the necessary criteria. And after several rounds of prototyping and user feedback, we have created a frame that you’ll love.
