Each installment features a photographer discussing a piece of equipment they can't do without—and a photograph they couldn't capture without it.

Photographer: Laurent Baillet

Equipment: Neutral density filter

Breakthrough Photography's neutral density filter, from my experience, are excellent for sharpness and color rendering. Neutral density filters’ aims is to reduce the quantity of light. This enables me to make long time exposures photos.

This picture was made in San Francisco during the week, a day that was quite crowded. You can feel some presence of people and cars, but you don't really see anybody. This is because the exposure lasted around 15 minutes. The result would have been very different without the 10 stops ND filter that I used for this. I also used a very good tripod (Gitzo) to avoid any moves of the camera during the exposure. This photo was made with a large format film camera.
