Each installment features a photographer discussing a piece of equipment they can't do without—and a photograph they couldn't capture without it.

Photographer: Marisa Boras

Equipment: Sony Alpha a7S II

After I retired my old Canon body of four and a half years, I decided it was time to upgrade to something new. I had shot with a Sony before and loved how it was so compact and easy to use. It's mirrorless, has Wi-Fi capabilities and can shoot in 4K video—all features I was looking for.

I do a lot of travel and portrait photography, so it's vital for me to have a lightweight piece of equipment that I can comfortably carry around with me for 10-12 hours a day. I was leading my family down the crowded Spanish Steps in Rome when I saw a large Italian man standing in the square giving away "free wonderful hugs." I knew this was a shot I needed and for one second, he turned around and opened his arms out wide for a split second before turning around. I paired the A7sii with a 55mm lens for this shot. I know I wouldn't have gotten this if I had to fumble through a camera bag to grab my gear before shooting.
